Vanessa was born in Chicago, IL, and raised in Nebraska where she first enlisted in the US Army at 17 years old. She later moved to Louisiana where she attended Louisiana State University at Shreveport and earned her Bachelor of General Studies in Applied Science and minor in Military Science. Vanessa went on to accept the challenge of joining the Field Artillery, a combat arms branch. She began her formal training at Fort Sill, OK, and was stationed in Bavaria, Germany. Vanessa served as a Fire Support Officer, Platoon Leader, and Executive Officer.
For the next three years, she completed four operational deployments across Europe with NATO and non-NATO armies. After her tenure in Europe, she was assigned to Fort Sill, OK as a platoon leader in a basic combat training unit. Vanessa was given the opportunity to build the human resources infrastructure for a unit that would support over 1,400 soldiers during their transformation from civilians to soldiers. After 10.5 years, she went into an inactive status to explore new career options while raising her one-year-old son, James, with her husband.
Her awards include an Army Certificate of Achievement, two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon, along with several unit accomplishments.
Using her prior military service experience, Vanessa leads the logistics & operations here at Sparrow Interiors & Gifts.
